Railyard District

The Santa Fe Railyard District dates back to the late 1880s when the Santa Fe Railway Company pulled its first train into Santa Fe.  Once the train arrived, businesses and neighborhoods built up around the station.  After World War II, the train system was bypassed with the building of the national highways and airlines.  But in 2002, a Railyard Master Plan was approved to revitalize the area and the Santa Fe Railyard Community Corporation was created to lease and manage the 50 acre site.

Today, the Railyard District has become a gathering place with live/work communities, home of the Santa Fe Farmers Market, restaurants, performance art spaces, shops and contemporary art galleries.  The Railyard District features the internationally known arts organization - Site Santa Fe, the Hispanic cultural center - El Museo Cultural and an innovative teen center - Warehouse 21.

With a September 2008 grand opening celebration, the Railyard District has been re-birthed as a transportation hub for Santa Fe with the arrival of the New Mexico Railrunner Express commuter train offering service to Albuquerque and Belen.  The developed Railyard Master Plan boasts parks, pedestrian trails, play areas, parking, commuter buses and bike trails for any transportation mode.
